Mission: Refits and Reviews
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD 2 || 0900 Hours

As scheduled, Maddy made her way into sickbay and looked around for a moment. As always, there were people milling about doing their jobs, which pleased her greatly. It was nice to see the crew busy, and that was even with the lack of patients present. There was always something that needed to be done somewhere.

She spotted a passing nurse. "I'm looking for Doctor Armitage."

The nurse offered the Executive Officer a smile and gestured toward the area where the CMO's office was. "He's in his office right now, but if you get settled on one of the biobeds, I'll let him know you're here."

"Thank you," the redhead said, making her way over to one of the empty beds where she settled down. It seemed she wasn't the only one receiving a checkup today, but it seemed to be customary whenever a new CMO arrived they wished to conduct examinations for themselves.

After Maddy was settled, the nurse made her way to the reception area where she planned to input some patient information into records and tapped her combadge. "Doctor Armitage, Captain Weisz is here for her appointment."

[ Chief Medical Officer's Office ]

Doctor R.M. Dominic Armitage sat on the sofa in his office with a PADD in his lap reviewing Captain Madelina Weisz's medical file for a recap while holding a cup of synthesized coffee in one hand. He had reviewed it the night before her checkup. He raised the mug to his lips about to take a sip but a nurse had interrupted. He remembered he had met the nurse in records the day previously, but he couldn't recall her name. He tapped his commbadge, "Please let the Captain know that I am on my way. Armitage out."

Armitage looked into the contents of his mug. It wasn't the same as the stuff he had the morning before his briefing with Commodore Aravan and the Captain. He picked up the PADD, rose to his feet and headed to Main Sickbay. A moment later, he stepped inside into the reception area.

The Nurse looked up from her duty station, "Captain Weisz is waiting for you on bio-bed 5 for you, Doctor."

Armitage looked up from his PADD to acknowledge the nurse, "Thank you, Nurse." He continued into the main area and walked up to the Captain, "Good morning Captain Weisz."

"Doctor," she greeted. "I trust you have been getting familiar with your department and the rest of the ship?"

"I don't expect I'll be able to recall everyone's name under my supervision like I was able to do on the Bonaventure. It'll take time, I suppose." The Doctor smiled. He looked over the PADD, "I have been reviewing your medical file in preparation for your medical this morning. When was your last review?"

Maddy looked thoughtful. It hadn't really been that long ago, but sadly, she couldn't quite remember. That spoke volumes. "I can't recall," she answered honestly. "Which means it's probably time for another one."

The nursing staff was self-proficient as they brought over a medical table with various medical instruments, "Thank you, Ensign." The Doctor placed the PADD down on the cart and picked up a tricorder. Before proceeding he inquired, "Anything you'd like me to check on today? Any pain or discomfort?"

"If you could do something about the non-stop reports that induce headaches, that'd be great," she joked. "But in all seriousness, no. I've been feeling pretty great lately, and have no complaints. I do have a request, though, and that's that I not leave here today without my contraceptive shot. I may not be as young as I used to be, but I'm definitely not ready to be someone's mother. Most of the crew need me to mom-hat them, and that's more then enough."

Doctor Armitage nodded his head, "Of course, Captain. You are aware that a medroxyprogesterone acetate doesn't protect you from undiscovered sexual diseases? While it is highly effective there's a 0.0001% rate of pregnancy?" The medical diagnosis equipment continued to do its thing.

Maddy didn't know that. No doctor before him had thought that information might be worth knowing. "Well, I did know about the diseases, but not about pregnancy. Still... that's an extremely rare chance."

"There was definitely an advancement of pregnancy prevention and sexual health in the 2200's with the increase of exploration of the galaxy and all that." The Doctor quipped with trivial information. The Doctor's smile turned into something more concerning. "Just give me a second here, Captain." He ran a system diagnostic check on the medical tricorder to ensure that it was functioning properly. It the diagnostic didn't confirm his suspicion and rescanned the Captain. "It is a good thing that we booked you first in for the rounds, Captain." He didn't want to have her wait for his diagnosis, "you have a cyst forming on your pulmonic valve. The good news is that we've found it early and that we can get ahead of it before it causes anymore cardicular issues."

She blinked. Once. Twice. Then a third time. "A cyst? On my heart?" Maddy asked, wishing he would run a scan on her ears, because she thought they were giving her problems now. And she didn't need to go to medical school to know what a pulmonic valve was. "I..." She closed her mouth and tried to form a coherent thought. "Can it be treated?"

"This is the first time I've used the TR-600 medical tricorder. I ran it's self-diagnostic tool and its functioning at one hundred percent with no errors reported. I could have the nurse run for a TR-590 Mark XI for a second opinion?"

"No, no. If you say it's there, and the equipment is running at one hundred percent, then it's got to be there," she said softly. "What is the treatment for this?"

"Simply using an Anabolic Protoplaser should be able to heal the cyst without surgery." Dr Armitage continued, "However, I would like you to come back to Sickbay for a checkup just to ensure that the cyst has not been reformed. I think this might be related to that time you were in space."

The Captain nodded her head. "I'll do whatever you need me to do. That being said, is this something we can take care of now, or do you need me to come back?"

"Just stay on the bed Captain, your heart will be back to normal shortly, " The Doctor turned around and picked up the protoplaser from the table with his free hand."

"Could you please lie down on your back please?"

Maddy did as asked and laid back. "Will this hurt?"

"You may feel some casual discomfort. Would you like me to get you a sedative?" The Doctor replied with concern.

"If you think it will help," she replies in return. "I have to admit to feeling a little anxious."

"Of course, Captain." The Doctor smiled. "One moment." He looked over to a nurse passing by, "Zero point eighth of a CC of ambrazine, please."

Dominic remembered the Captain's request for an medroxyprogesterone acetate. He called after the nurse as she made her way to the pharmacy, "And two CC of medroxyprogesterone acetate as well, please."

The Nurse turned, "Yes Doctor." She returned with two different hyposprays.

"Thank you," Armitage replied. "On the surgical table."

Armitage took the first hypospray marked with the ambrazine. "This is a mild concentrate of the sedative. It won't knock you out but it will make sure there's no pain. If you feel any discomfort, please let me know."

The Doctor pressed the hypospray against her neck and released the contents into the Captain's system. He still had the protoplaster in hand, "Let me know when you are ready for the procedure."

Maddy closed her eyes and allowed the medication to take effect. She didn't have to wait long, a few minutes, she'd guess, before she was feeling relaxed and ready. "All set," she said, keeping her eyes closed. The Captain definitely didn't want to watch what was about to happen.

The Doctor pressed the interface on the bio-bed to bring up a holographic projection. He selected the filter for the heart and isolated the area where the cyst was located and magnified it to get a precise area for the protoplaser.

He used the interface on the protoplaser to set it to a finer pinpoint for the procedure. And got to work. It took of using the protoplaser around the cyst. The hologram showed the cyst disappear. To ensure that it had. He placed the protoplaser down onto the surgical table and grabbed his tricorder and scanned the area, "you are good as new. Any pain?"

"Mild discomfort, but nothing I can't handle," the Captain replied. "Is that it? I'm done?" It seemed too easy, but Maddy was definitely grateful. "And could it return?"

"I do want you to come in for a checkup. If you start to feel any pain, please come by and get treatment." The Doctor continued, "we still need to give you a shot of the counter-pregnancy drug and then you are good to go."

She nodded her head. "Definitely can't forget that, and if I feel anything strange, I'll be back as fast as my legs can get me here," the redhead stated. "Do you want me to schedule a checkup now, or wait?"

"Come by in seventy-two hours," Doctor Armitage replied as he walked over to the surgical table and picked up the last hypospray. "Ready for your last shot for today?"

Maddy nodded her head. "I'm ready when you are."

The Doctor nodded his head while returning to her. He pressed the hypospray to her neck and delivered the drug into her system, "You are dismissed, Captain." He grinned to himself, "I've never gotten to say that to a Captain before. Small wins, right?"

The Captain laughed. "I'd say it counts, she said as she sat up again. "I'll be seeing you again in a few days. Again, welcome aboard, Doctor. I think you're going to fit in nicely."
