Debrief
Posted on Thu May 9, 2019 @ 7:58pm by Commodore Michael Aravan & Captain Madelina Weisz & Lieutenant Commander Kelani Tetanal & Lieutenant JG Logan Hunter
Mission:
On Slippery Ground
Location: USS Triumphant Ready Room
Timeline: MD 1 || 1800 Hours
Logan stepped onto the bridge of the Triumphant with Brian and Amanda. He gave both of them a reassuring look. "It's just a quick debrief. Nothing to worry about." He stepped up to the door to Ready Room and depressed the chime button announcing their arrival.
"Enter," Michael called. He sat a the long black table that doubled as an LCARS interface with a mug of steaming coffee beside of him on a coaster. He wasn't sure how to receive the young people that Lieutenant Hunter had discovered on the base, but time would tell. As for the Orions, he'd have to turn them over to Starfleet.
Logan, Brian and Amanda entered the ready room and crossed to the table. Logan stood at attention. "Sir, Lieutenant junior grade Hunter returning to duty." He still wore the flight suit he'd left the ship on hours before.
"Lieutenant Tetanal and Captain Weisz, report to the ready room," Michael ordered. "Someone will be happy to see you. And now you can tell me what happened."
Upon hearing the summons, Kelani rose and moved to the Captain's Ready Room, and pressed the chime, awaiting permission to enter. She had been a bundle of nerves, longing to see Logan, but knowing that a debrief was necessary....
"Enter," Michael called.
Kelani entered and said, "Lt. Tetanal reporting, sir..." Her eyes fell on Logan and she smiled, feeling the weight and worry lift from her. She longed to run to him, but did not. There would be time for them....later.
After Kelani entered the ready room, Maddy made her way inside. She could only hope they'd found Logan, and now, this was the way she would be finding out. "Commodore, Lieutenant," she greeted, moving further into the office so she could take a seat.
Logan resisted the urge to sweep Kelani up in an embrace. He did smile at her warmly and gave her a nod of his head as he took a seat between her and Maddy at the table. "Good to see you Lieutenant."
So, this was about finding their missing CAG. Maddy would be lying if she didn't admit she was quite happy to see him back and safe, though, she was sure no one was more excited about it that their Chief of Science. Still, there were some questions that needed answering, and Michael would likely start with those. "Lieutenant Hunter," she greeted. "Glad to see you're back."
"Glad to be back Captain." Logan punctuated his statement with a nod of his head towards Maddy.
"Now down to business," Michael stated. "Lieutenant Hunter, give us a report on everything that transpired from the moment we lost contact with you."
Logan took a deep breath and went into his explanation of the engagement with the Orion fighters, his use of a missile to ignite a plasma storm, his subsequent discovery of the asteroid base and being fired upon. He went into the crash landing and waking up in the base's infirmary. He described the 'trial' he was subjected to and the events that followed in the ops center and the running fire fight throughout the base with the Orions. He finally turned to Michael. "I'm not a JAG officer, but if these survivors are going to be charged with assault on a Starfleet officer...I will refuse to press charges...and I will admit in a board of inquiry that the cause of my crash was pilot error."
Michael looked at Brian and Amanda. "And now for your story," he said.
Brian and Amanda made their statements in turn, pretty well matching Logan official statements. Brian seemed somewhat ashamed of wanting to trade Logan to the Orions, but was extremely happy he hadn't.
"Was it pilot error? Really?" Maddy inquired. "And don't think to lie to me. I've been around enough officers to know when one is, and when one isn't."
Logan looked at Maddy for a full ten count before answering. "Sir, my Valkyrie was damaged when I arrived at the asteroid base. The uh, additional damage I received as I was coming in for a landing proved to be beyond my skills to do anything but crash land."
Captain Weisz couldn't argue with that. "I'm glad you were able to come through without any major injuries, Lieutenant. Do you feel you need to speak with a counselor regarding the experience?"

"Not that story," Michael told the two young people. "I mean how you came to be on that base for such a long time with no adults."
Amanda spoke up to tell the story of how the Dominion found the asteroid base and attacked it. The survival of the young ones was due to her mother and another adult taking the children down to mines and hiding there with a portable life support unit for heat and oxygen. When the survivors emerged they found all the other adults killed and small fleet of vessels either taken or destroyed. Her mother and the other adult had died only two years before Logan's arrival.
"That couldn't have been easy," Michael said. "Did you ever try to find a way off the base?"
Maddy remained quiet for the moment. Something about this didn't sit well with her, but she'd been pretty skeptical of a lot of things in the past. Of course, those instincts had been right most of the time, but in this instance, she hoped that wouldn't be the case.
Brian shook his head derisively. "Amanda's mother was a nurse. The other adult was a Starfleet enlisted man who deserted his ship during shore leave. Neither one of them were engineers. Even if there had been something salvageable to build a shuttle with they didn't have the skills to do it."
"Do you know if you have other family back in the Federation?" Michael asked. "Or if the others do?"
Amanda reached into her pocket and pulled out an isolinear chip. "This is a record of everyone at the base during the time of the attack. Maybe your database will be able to help us to find relatives."
Logan looked at the group around the table. "I would like to help the survivors get settled in. They...did save my life."
Michael looked at Maddy. "Your choice, Captain Weisz," he said.
"I'm not entirely sure that should be my call, Commodore," Maddy said. After all, why should that be put on her when she was as skeptical as she was? If he wanted her to make the call, they'd be spending some time in the brig until she knew for fact they weren't a threat to anyone, however, the Captain would see to it they were well taken care of.
"I'm asking because I value your opinion," Michael said, giving her the look that he used in private with her in the ready room when he was ready for her side of the argument to keep him balanced.
"Very well," the redhead said as her blue eyed gaze turned toward their two guests. "We know nothing about either one of you, short of what you've told us. It's easy to tell people what you think they want to hear. Given things that have happened on this ship in the past... along with the need to protect our crew... it is my recommendation that they both be placed under constant guard until this story can be one hundred percent verified."
She paused, though, Maddy wasn't finished yet. "I'm not suggesting that either of you be treated as though you're criminals, but there are thousands of lives on board this ship that we are responsible for. You will remain under constant guard with no access to critical areas of the ship and limited access to others. Your replicator usage will also be limited to food and necessities required to live, and will be monitored," she said. "If for one second I feel something is off, those stipulations can... and will... change without notice." She looked toward Michael. "Is that sufficient? Do you wish to take away or add anything?"
Michael nodded and looked at Brian and Amanda. "That seems fair to me. However, if you or the others attempt to bypass our precautions, you'll be restricted to quarters."
Brian looked away from those at the table. He felt like his world was suddenly turned upside down. He had been the community leader of a group of survivors. Now he was nothing more than a refugee in a prison, even if it was a good looking prison.
Amanda glanced at Brian before turning to Michael and nodding. "We understand sir. We really are grateful, especially if you can help us all find family to reunite with."
Logan looked about the table at the assembled officers. He was anxious to get the others settled in and have a proper reunite with his new fiancee.
Kelani watched and listened, not feeling it necessary to say anything now. She resolved to speak to the young ones who had helped Logan later.
Right now, she longed for Logan's arms around her.....
Michael called for a couple Security personnel to escort the young people to quarters with orders about restricted areas and other restrictions, then dismissed everyone but Maddy.
"Thoughts, Maddy?" he asked.
Maddy turned her attention toward Michael after everyone else walked out. "My thoughts? You mean... aside from the ones where I'm suspicious of everyone who boards this ship?" she asked. "I don't have any. However, the necessary precautions have been put in place just in case these individuals can't be trusted."
"Then I'll leave you in charge of what you do best," Michael said. "Don't ever change." With a nod, he turned and headed back to the bridge.
