Performance Review - Arrda

Posted on Mon Aug 5, 2019 @ 5:32am by Lieutenant Commander Arrda & Captain Madelina Weisz

Mission: Refits and Reviews
Location: XO's Office
Timeline: MD 7 || 1200 Hours

With the list of names slowly, very slowly, winding down, Maddy looked to the next name on her list. Lieutenant Arrda, Security Chief. She definitely had a soft spot for the position, as it was her previous assignment on another ship once upon a time. That seemed like a lifetime ago, though, and now, they redhead needed to focus on the present. Tapping her combadge, she leaned back. "Lieutenant Arrda, report to my office," she ordered.

Drills were a thing no security officer enjoyed, but they all needed them to keep at the top of their game. Arrda was currently overseeing a set of drills when his comm. badge chirped for attention, followed by the XO's voice. Well, here it comes. he thought to himself even as he tapped his own badge and responded. =/\= On my way, Commander. =/\= He turned the session over to the ranking officer of that team and left, straightening his uniform as he rode the lift to the correct deck.

Reaching the office, he set himself, prepared for the ass-chewing he was sure was going to be forthcoming because of the last mission. The Neutrality he had been trained for long ago served him now as a sort of shield as he tapped the door announcer.

"Come in," Maddy called as she rose to her feet to greet the Lieutenant.

At the command, Arrda keyed the door and stepped inside far enough for the doors to close before coming to Attention and saluting. "Reporting as ordered, Captain." he said crisply.

"I did. At ease, Lieutenant," the redhead said, gesturing to the chair across from her. "Please, have a seat. Can I get you anything before we get started?"

Arrda shifted to an At Ease posture as he tood the chair. "Just coffee will be fine, thank you." he said, watching her body language for any clues as to her disposition in this meeting.

"Coffee it is," Maddy said as she moved to the replicator and put in the Lieutenant's request. Her body language was the same as it ever was, neutral. Unless, of course, she was dealing with a hostile situation. With the coffee in hand, she moved back toward Arrda and passed it over to him, then retook her seat. "It's performance review time. That being said, how about we jump straight into things?"

Arrda took the coffee, offering a "Thank you, Ma'am." as he did. He took a sip then nodded. "I see no reason to delay, Ma'am. Where do you wish to begin?" Most people dreaded these, but he didn't. They were as much an opportunity for him to learn what did and did not please his commanders as they were a chance for said commanders to evaluate his responses to their critiques. He suspected that there would be good and bad this time, but more good than bad. He always tried to keep it that way. But rather than guess at what the lady before him would focus on, he merely waited, expression calm and neutral.

"I want to begin with asking you how you feel your performance has been since your last review," the Captain told him.

Arrda considered both the lady and her question in silence for several moments. "For the most part, I would classify my performance as very good." He never personally classified it as excellent or any such arrogant-seeming adjective; that was for those above him to do or not to do. "I say 'for the most part' because I am aware that you may have issue with something on our last mission, and so I take that into account." If she didn't, then that was good, but always better safe than sorry. Besides, honesty always served him better in these things.

"I don't disagree with you, Lieutenant, however I do feel there are some in your department that could do with a bit more training. Starfleet is supposed to send us the best of the best, but we're still sent some personnel that are fresh off of their senior cruise," she told him, taking a sip of the tea that was settled on her desk. "You're a damn fine officer, and they could learn a lot from you."

Arrda felt a bit relieved by her statements, relieved and somewhat flattered. He knew that she did not hand out compliments lightly, so getting one was high praise. "I do have standard training sessions that are a normal part of Security, designed as refreshers mostly. Am I correct in thinking that you are asking for something more... in-depth and personally guided?" He just wanted to make sure they were on the same page before going any further. Better to clarify now than to have misunderstandings later, after all.

"Well, with your permission, I'd like to observe one of your training sessions," the Captain said. "Just to see who might require more attention and who seems to be on par. You could provide more in-depth and personally guided instruction, or you could pass the job off to one of your more trusted officers. That choice will be up to you."

Arrda thought about this for a moment. It was not all that unusual a request. Teleth Norr had stood watch on several refresher sessions with the Enforcers at his estate, so this wasn't all that different. This lady had been Security before gaining enough rank to be taken out of that field into the Command Line. She was likely still very much keyed into that field, though, as Teleth Norr was.

"I have no problem with that." he answered. "As to the rest, I suppose it will depend on what kind of personal attention is required and whether I feel that the officer in question would be served best by my hand or someone else's." Unless, as he did not add, she saw something and had a specific recommendation at that time.

"Then, I suppose that we'll have to set up a training schedule," the Captain stated. "You see what time would be best among your personnel, and I'll be there. I can move things around to make it happen."

Arrda pondered a moment, sipping the coffee. "Well, you want to observe one of my normal sessions first, so why not just come and watch the scheduled ones?" he offered. "There is one tomorrow morning at 0800 if that's convenient. If not, I have them every day for different segments of my staff. Today was Alpha Shift; tomorrow will be Beta Shift, and so on. Then we cycle back."

Maddy nodded her head. "That sounds like a good idea. I'll start observing tomorrow, but I want to see all shifts, so this will take a few days to accomplish. However, that's okay," she said, reaching to grab something from her desk. The Captain rose to her feet and moved around to stand next to the Lieutenant and gave his collar a gentle tug as she affixed something to it.

"Of course. You and even the commodore if he wishes, are always welcome to observe." He had nothing to hide. And he would train his people the same whether they watched or not.

Her action caught him slightly off guard, but Arrda was never one to assume, He blinked and looked down at what the Captain was doing.

"Sorry... your uniform required a little adjusting," she said, gesturing for him to move into her bathroom where there was a mirror waiting for him to look into. Maddy took a step back so he'd be able to get up without her being in the way. "Go see for yourself."

Thank the Mother Creator for his Enforcer training because it kept his expression unchanged and his mind from jumping to conclusions. Oh, she had made it pretty obvious to a trained mind like his what he would likely see, but he was not going to assume.

Standing, he nodded to her and moved into the bathroom where he took a look into the mirror... and smiled. He was not a climber per se, but he did see such rank increases as a statement by those above him of their being pleased with his performance. And of that he could be proud. He also knew that Danielle would be pleased.

Turning, he did not bother to take the smile from his expression. He returned to the office and stopped before Captain Weisz. "Thank you, Ma'am." he offered. "I vow to continue to serve to the best of my ability."

"I know you will, Commander," she said, offering him a smile. "For now, I'll let you get back to your duties. And, remember, my door is always open. You're dismissed."

Arrda returned the smile, giving one more salute. "Thank you, Ma'am. I will remember that. Good day." Thus saying, he turned smartly and left the office. Duty awaited.
