Not Just Another Medical Exam

Posted on Tue Jul 26, 2016 @ 3:53am by Lieutenant Commander Alex Rho & Commodore Michael Aravan & Dasha Washburn

Mission: An Orion to Die For
Location: Medical
Timeline: MD 0 || 1045 Hours

Alex had started to get settled in after visiting Operations. He not only found his quarters assignment but was also able to meet the Ops Chief. He really wanted to get down to the Intelligence Center and start getting to know everything and everyone that had already come aboard. But the Captain had made sure to point out that he needed to get his visit to Medical out of the way. So that's where he was now headed.

Alex walked into the large Sickbay and looked around for a nurse or doctor that wasn't busy.

A redhead wearing the pips of a Lieutenant had just finished an exam of a little Andorian boy and gave instructions to his parent before she made a note on a PADD and sent them on their way. She turned to place the PADD on a table when she saw the tall brown haired, green eyed man in Intelligence gray. She set the PADD aside and approached him.

"Can I help you, Lieutenant?" She asked him. "I'm Lieutenant Washburn, the Chief Medical Officer here."

"Ah, Lieutenant Washburn, just the person I was looking for," said Alex. "I'm Lieutenant Alex Rho. Captain Aravan suggested I get my visit to Medical taken care of and so here I am, reporting for my coming aboard physical."

Dasha gave the man a smile and picked up a medical tricorder from the table where she had put the PADD before she looked at him again. "Have a seat on of the biobeds, Lieutenant....?"

Alex chuckled a bit as he had already introduced himself. "Lieutenant Rho," he said, scooting backwards on the biobed. "Has been pretty busy down here already?"

"Let's put it this way," she said. "I have two hundred personnel and there's four thousand people on the ship. That's twenty people per each of my staff. Busy? That doesn't begin to cover it." She picked up a PADD and entered his name into it, then frowned when the information came up and looked back up at him.

"Is there anything medical about you that you'd like to discuss before I begin my scans?"

Alex noticed her frown and suspected. Then she asked her question and he grinned. "I am Ullian by birth."

"A Ullian?" Dasha asked to verify and glanced at her PADD again, then she looked back at him. "I also see that it isn't a mere disguise, either. I assume it's not a medical reason?"

"No, there was no medical reason for it," said Alex. "And yes, it's permanent reconstructive surgery to cover the cranial bulges." In an attempt to head her off, he continued, "I had it done before I joined Starfleet. Turns out, it comes in handy for an Intelligence Officer. It's kind of like a permanent cover."

"Will this affect you if you need additional disguises for other potential assignments?" she asked as she detached the sensor probe from the tricorder and began to run it over him, starting from his head and working her way down.

"It hasn't yet," said Alex. "But I'd imagine if I needed Klingon forehead ridges, it would be interesting. And with the little that I've seen of this ship so far, you wouldn't be here on this vessel if you weren't one of the top Chief Medical Officers. I'd trust you to do your job well."

"Thank you," Dasha said as she finished her scan. "I'll trust you to do yours just as well, Lieutenant." She picked up the tricorder to check the results of the scan. "I see that you've had previous broken bones and...." she went to a holographic interface and pulled up information on the Ullian species. She studied it a minute and fed the scan from the tricorder into it and frowned before she went back to him.

"Have you been experiencing any abdominal pain, mild fever, or digestive upset recently?"

"Ahh, the broken bones. I remember that assignment all too well." He grabbed his left arm and rib cage area. "All too well." Then he looked at the Doctor sideways for a moment. "Yes, as a matter of fact, digestive upset fits what I've been feeling. And there has been occasional pain here...," he gestured to an area on his abdomen, "...but not often at all. Just once or twice a month, I'd say. Based on your question, that's probably something I should've had checked out when it started happening?"

"Based on the scan I just took, it could be the Ullian version of appendicitis, which in your species around be diviburoculous involving your secondary tadreanal organ," Dasha told him. "If you'll lay back on the biobed, I'll perform a more thorough scan."

As he laid back, Alex took a deep breath. "That doesn't sound good," he said. He lifted his head and watched as the doctor began her more thorough scan. "The Ullian version of appendicitis...." He let his voice trail. "I suppose it's best to have it checked out now rather than have something happen in the middle of a mission."

Dasha moved the monitor from the side of the biobed over Rho's torso and initiated a deep scan. "How long has it been happening, Lieutenant?" she asked as she looked at the chart and reviewed the specifics of Ullian physiology. While she did that, she ran a search for infections of the secondary tadreanal organ and diviburoculous.

Putting his head back down, he rolled it over to face the redhead as best as he could. "It's been happening for about three and a half, maybe four months now," he said. "I hope I didn't wait too long."

The Chief Medical Officer frowned again as she consulted the biocomputer. "Why didn't anyone catch this before now?" she asked. "Are you one of the people who avoid Medical even when your body tells you that you need help, Lieutenant?" She picked up a hypospray and loaded it with the prescribed medication for Ullian diviburoculous and pressed it to his neck. "You're going to need one treatment every twenty-four hours, but fortunately for you, you won't need to have it removed. That's also good because if it were removed, you'd be stuck here with me for six weeks while you recovered."

Alex sighed. "You've found me out. Yes, I am one of those people who tends to avoid Medical and push through the pain." He felt the hypospray against his neck and the sharp puff as the medicine was injected. "I presume I'll need to come back here for that daily treatment, then? Because I really don't look forward to being stuck in here for six weeks of recovery time." He paused and smiled. "And not sure that Captain Aravan would appreciate it, either."

"Captain Aravan does not run Medical," Dasha said as she checked the readings on the biocomputer. "That includes my decisions in regards to his crew. You may still have some of the symptoms but they'll be less each day. I want you in here before the start of you shift every day, Lieutenant Rho and I will page you on a ship wide comm if you don't come. Now are you still going to repress the urge to avoid Medical?"

Alex started laughing. "No more Medical repressions for me, Doctor. I will be here at zero seven-thirty every morning until you tell me otherwise. I'm glad to hear the symptoms will gradually disappear, too. How long will I be taking the treatment afterwards to ensure that it doesn't start again?"

"You only need seven treatments to ensure it doesn't happen again," Dasha said as she moved the scanner aside and to its place by the side of the biobed again. "To be certain, you should include enough soluble fiber in the form of fruits and vegetables. To get non-soluble fiber, eat whole grains, wheat bread, cucumber, celery, zucchini, and carrots."

"Okay, the next seven days at zero seven-thirty. And I increase my fruit and vegetable intake," said Alex. He sat up after the Doctor had moved the scanner back to the side. "That should be fairly easy, I think." He hung his legs over the edge of the biobed. "Thank you, Doctor."

Dasha finished entering the information into the computer and turned back to him. "You're not done yet, Lieutenant. Are you sexually active? We encourage single officers to get contraceptive shots to prevent pregnancies."

Alex looked at the Doctor and half-grinned. "Well, yes, I am." He tilted his head to the side, exposing his neck for the hypospray. "Consider me encouraged," he said, chuckling.

She smiled and loaded up another hypospray after making sure it was for Ullian's, then pressed it to his neck with a hiss and puff. "There you go," she said. "Remember, you have to get contraceptive shots once a month. Would you like me to put you in the medical computer for reminders?"

Alex went from chuckling to all out laughter. "You are a quick one, Doctor Washburn. But no, there's no need to put it in the medical computer. My mind and memory is Ullian, remember. I'll keep in there for safer keeping, thank you."

"Of course, Lieutenant," Dasha said. "I won't forget that again just like you won't. Do you have any other concerns before I release you as being fit?"

Alex smiled. "No other concerns, Doctor. Do you have any other concerns that showed on the scans? Anything that I need to be aware of?"

"Nothing other than what I've told you, Lieutenant Rho," Dasha said as she signed off on a PADD and entered the information into the computer. You're free to go."

"Thank you, Doctor Washburn. Until tomorrow morning, then." Alex turned to head out of Medical and to the Intelligence Center. He had a feeling that he was going to enjoy this transfer.
