Falling Star
Location: Martha's Office
Timeline: MD32 || 08:30
Martha was busy minding her own business whilst working on next week's duty roster for her department when she heard a surprise 'knock' at her door. With the unexpected chime echoing around the office Martha continued to look at the screen and assign people to duties as she gave her guest permission to enter.
"Enter" Martha called.
Gaalen - clutching a PADD - entered Martha's office and walked up to the centre of the room. The blonde woman looked busy as she worked away on the console on the desk - and almost immediately wondered if he should ask to comeback later.
"I apologise Lieutenant - if I knew you were busy I would have visited a later time. Do you want me to come back later?" Gaalen asked.
Martha replied. "It depends what it's about Mr Tholav. I'm in the middle of doing a duty roster at the moment but if it's only a brief visit then I can accommodate you now"
Gaalen was surprised Martha knew his name just by his voice.
"That's very good...how do you...do that?" Gaalen asked.
Martha let a knowing grin cross her face as she continued to look at the screen. Over the years she'd managed to develop the ability of putting voices to names as well as faces.
Martha shrugged. "I'm good with names and voices Mr Tholav - it usually helps when I'm working on something and someone asks for me. That way I can usually guess what they're asking me for before they've actually asked"
Martha then paused and decided to hear what Gaalen wanted to speak to her about.
"Go ahead Ensign. What is it?" Martha asked.
Gaalen spoke. "Maybe I should learn that. What I'd like to ask you is I'm currently building a model of the Kumari from the 22nd century and I'd like to put some laser beams on it to replicate the particle cannons. I've already made provision for them but...never really asked for help with making them"
Martha listened and after finishing the rota for next Thursday she stopped and turned whilst thinking about the Andorian had just asked her. It was an interesting project for sure but she wasn't exactly an expert at making things for model starships.
"How small are you talking?" Martha asked.
Gaalen had designed the Kumari model to a 1/200 scale. That meant with the real thing being 360 metres long his model was 1.8 metres long. Martha's response was somewhat encouraging although Gaalen was hoping for a more definitive answer.
"It's 1.8 metres long Lieutenant - so 1/200 scale" Gaalen replied.
Martha nodded. "Alright...that's pretty small. I could probably put something together for you but I can't promise it'll be any time soon. Do you have the measurements for the ports where they would be fitted?"
Gaalen was pleased with the answer. Fortunately he had brought the measurements along with him on a PADD and moving closer to Martha's desk he nodded.
"Here...and thank you" Gaalen replied.
Martha accepted the PADD and looked at the measurements in detail. It was very small but not entirely possible to design and replicate some miniature lasers to represent 22nd century Andorian particle cannons. Even if this was probably more suited to an engineer Martha was happy to offer her services to the Andorian Ensign.
"Give me a week or so to come up with something. It would probably help for me to come and have a look at this model of yours before I make them though - I can pop around at some point this evening if that's any use to you?" Martha asked.
Gaalen nodded. "Of course. I usually have my evening meal at around 18:30 so could you make it any time after 19:00"
"That fits in for me. I was wondering though...why me? I'm not really an expert at making models" Martha replied.
Gaalen shrugged. "Honestly...I did think that but you are the Tactical Officer and seeing as well...they're miniature scale lasers to represent particle cannons...I thought you might be interested"
"I appreciate that Ensign. Like I said I'm happy to help but...it'll be a week or so before I get a chance to do anything. Once I've come up with something I'll let you know before we proceed" Martha responded.
Gaalen was extremely pleased with Martha's offer of help.
"I understand completely Lieutenant - and thank you. I'll get out of your way and see you later this evening" Gaalen said.
Gaalen then turned around and departed from Martha's office.
