Lucia had made her way to sickbay for her appointment to discuss her decision with Martha to have a baby together. Whilst on holiday they decided that because of Martha's job - and her recently discovered inability to have her own child - Lucia would carry their baby rather than use a surrogate. Excited about their future plans Lucia made her way to sickbay for her appointment - hoping to give Martha some positive news that evening.
Lucia entered sickbay and looked around for a doctor. Coming across a relatively tall dark-haired man Lucia approached him and smiled sweetly.
"Oh hello Doctor. I have an appointment at 11:00 - Lucia Cusack" Lucia said.
Willie turned at the sound of a female voice, then looked down and spotted a petite brunette standing there. A wide, warm smile crossed his lips and went to his eyes. "Doctor? Oh honey, if I were a Doctor, I'd be in charge. I'm just a Medical officer, but I know my way around," he said as he grabbed a PADD to pull up the appointments.
"Cusack, Lucia. Yup. That's you," he said. "What can I do for you today, Mrs. Cusack?" he asked, seeing that she was married. A part of him died a little at that, but it was a big ship with a lot of women and men on it.
Lucia smiled. "Well...I was hoping to get some advice. My wife and I would like to have a baby together and we wanted to make sure I'm able to carry a child before we plan it any further. Hopefully you'll be the one that can help us get that answer"
Martha had tried to make it to the appointment but unfortunately she was stuck in a meeting and unable to get out of it. Nevertheless Lucia knew Martha would have been there if she was able to.
"Right this way, sweetie," Willie said with a smile as he led her back to a private room after he logged her into the system for her appointment. He picked up a Medical tricorder and checked the log to see when it was last calibrated, then gave a nod. "Just hop right up on this cozy biobed and I'll scan to see if you can be a mommy," he told her as he patted the bed with his free hand.
Lucia followed William into the private room. Once inside she got onto the biobed and swivelled around into a comfortable position.
"This sickbay is very fancy...the last one we had the use of wasn't half the size or as modern as this one. What's it like to be a doctor by the way?" Lucia asked.
"I don't know," he said. "I'm not a Doctor. Oh, and I am so rude. I apologize. I'm Warrant Officer William Fontaine, but you can call me Willie. I really just enjoy being able to help people. I see that you're in Security. Or is it Tactical? I'm not used to such a big ship and split departments."
Lucia smiled. "It's alright Willie. I'm in Security myself but my wife's in Tactical. I like shooting the bad guys and she likes blowing things up so it goes hand in hand. I think this is her favourite ship so far because of the 'toys' she gets to 'play' with".
"Oh, child, you're one of those that sends people for me to patch up?" Willie asked in mock horror. "Honey, I need to sit down and have a talk with you, but first, let's get you scanned. Open wide and say ahhhhh," he instructed her.
Lucia giggled and nodded. "I'm sorry about that"
Pausing for a moment to stop giggling Lucia then opened her mouth and made the requested 'aahhh' noise. She found William to be very friendly indeed - unlike the last doctor she saw who wasn't exactly rude but quite blunt and keen to get Lucia in and out of her medical exam as soon as possible.
He studied the tricorder as he swept it over her, then looked at her. "I see what the problem is, sweetie," he said with a seriousness to his tone even though his eyes sparkled with some form of mischief.
Lucia could see Willie was trying to tease her but she decided to go along with it anyway and see where it went.
"Oh? And what's that William?" Lucia replied.
Unable to help himself, Willie busted out laughing and had to support himself on the edge of the biobed. "You can't get pregnant with your mouth open like that," he managed between gasps of breath.
Lucia gave a playful disproving look and gently slapped Willie on the head.
"Hey that's mean! That's it...I'm going to call you William from now on" Lucia responded.
"Eep!" he ducked down and mock cowered with the tricordered raised in defense. "Sorry. Sorry! I couldn't resist when you did that. You fell for it for a tricorder scan!" He started to laugh again.
Lucia giggled. "I'll let you off this time - but only because you're nice -
most of the time. Just don't do it again or I'll definitely be calling you William - and I'll see about finding out any embarrassing middle names too"
"Thank you, sweet goddess of Security!" Willie said as he straightened up again. "I promise to be nice. I really do." He looked at the tricorder reading again. "Well, according to this, there's nothing to stop you from having a baby. Other than being married to a woman, but we have sperm stored from a variety of species for artificial insemination, or you could chose to have one the old fashioned way if you and your wife consent to that."
Lucia tittered and looked at the Doctor with a cheeky grin. Once the scan was completed she was pleased to hear the good news - although Martha was unable to have a baby herself Lucia was - which meant they could think about the next stage of their plan.
"That's amazing news...thank you. From what Martha and I discussed we were hoping to go down the artificial route - human of course. Is there a waiting list for insemnation? It's just once I've shared the news with my wife we're hoping to get the ball rolling sooner rather than later" Lucia replied.
Willie went to the medical computer and did a check then shook his head. "Nope. No waiting list in general, but you can narrow it down by planet of birth, hair and eye color, genetic lineage, medical history and the list goes on and on. Are you sure you don't want to play the genetic lottery and try the old fashioned way?"
He stopped and blushed furiously when he realized what that sounded like and backpedaled. "Er, I mean, umm...that's not what I meant!" he wailed.
For a moment Lucia thought he may have been joking but decided to ask anyway - just in case he was actually being serious. Willie had a lot of good qualities that were hard to deny - his sense of humour his good nature were just two of them.
Lucia responded. "No go on...if you want to play it that way then perhaps it would be nice to at least know who the father is rather than just a picture on a profile. If you're being serious perhaps I can speak to my wife about it and introduce her to you before we make a decision?"
"M-m-me?" Willie stuttered. She was very attractive, but he knew the odds were strongly against him being a candidate. Still, he knew he had nothing to lose. "Are you sure?"
Lucia nodded and smiled sweetly.
"Well...you are a nice looking guy Willie and you've got a sweet and respectful nature. Two of the qualities I'd love to see in a son if I was ever to have one. I can't promise the old fashioned way but if you've ever wanted to be a dad I know I would and I think Martha will be happy to give you that opportunity. We have always said if the father wants to be a part of his or her life we'd let him" Lucia replied.
"Whatever the case may be, I'm honored just to be considered if that's what you and your wife decide," Willie said. Her sweet smile and deep brown eyes seemed to draw him in, but then he heard her saying that her wife likes blowing things up in his head and drew back mentally.
"You're all set here, Mrs. Cusack," he told her. "Just let me know if you want to set up a meeting."
Lucia smiled sweetly again and nodded. She appreciated all of Willie's help and hoped it was the start of something special for them all. Lucia was fairly confident Martha would agree but she wanted to make sure first before proceeding.
"Of course. I'm going to tell my wife and our daughter later so...maybe a bit later on this evening? Say about 20:00? As you can probably tell we're quite eager and excited to get started" Lucia replied.
"It's a date," Willie said with a return smile. "Well, you know what I mean. Just contact me via comm and I'll be there with a smile on."
"Sure. We might even let you have a cup of tea or coffee - whichever you prefer" Lucia said.
Lucia nodded and hopped off the bed before she stood up on tiptoes she kissed Willie sweetly on the cheek.
Lucia concluded. "Thank you Willie. You've been so helpful and you're really sweet - I think Martha will like you. I do already even if you're such a tease"
Lucia then made her way out of sickbay to return to her duty for another half an hour before her lunch break.
